Don’t Let the Flu Sneak Up on You, Get Your Flu Shot Now
According to the CDC's most recent report, flu season is off to a stronger start this year than in prior years. The good news is, it's not too late to get your flu shot- the most effective way to prevent illness due to influenza.
The flu is more serious than you may realize. According to a study by the CDC, more than 200,000 people in the United States, on average, are hospitalized each year for illnesses associated with seasonal influenza virus infections. Furthermore, certain adults are at higher risk for serious illness and complications from the flu.
Flu cases typically peak from December to February, so we can expect to see a significant jump in flu activity as winter shifts into high gear. Below are some tips for staying healthy this flu season:
- Get a flu shot. The flu shot may not protect against all strains of the flu, but it will protect you against the 3-4 strains that research suggests will be most likely to spread during the current flu season.
- Wash your hands. Washing your hands regularly with soap and water can help limit your exposure to germs and prevent the spread of germs you may be carrying.
- Disinfect surfaces. Cleaning surfaces that see regular hand contact can help cut down on the spread of illness causing germs.
- Avoid touching your face. Refrain from touching your eyes, nose and mouth in particular as these areas are most vulnerable to germs.
