The Hippocratic Oath: Our Devotion to the Science and “Art” of Medicine
Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) has many stories about how we practice medicine. In this video, we illustrate why we practice medicine.
“The Oath of Hippocrates has remained in Western civilization an expression of ideal conduct for the physician,” according to the American Medical Association.
The Hippocratic Oath is a reminder to consider the importance of bedside manner, or the “art” of medicine. It’s our devotion to the compassionate care of every patient who walks through our doors.
“There is a science in what we do, yes, but also habit, intuition, and sometimes plain old guessing,” wrote Atul Gawande, MD, a surgeon at BWH, in his book Complications. “The gap between what we know and what we aim for persists. And this gap complicates everything we do.”
